The National Workshop cum Training on Drudgery Assessment jointly organised by SHUATS, Allahabad and ICAR ATARI, Kanpur was held from the 26th August 2019 to 30th August 2019 at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Training Hall, Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences, Prayagraj.
The sole aim of the workshop was to train the Home Scientists of KVKs in how to calculate drudgery and what are the qualitative and qualitative methods of drudgery assessment. In the five days workshop 18 Technical Sessions had been conducted by various eminent speakers of respective fields, in which complete knowledge on drudgery and its assessment was imparted.

The following is a brief report on the National Workshop cum Training on Drudgery Assessment from the past five days.
The Chief Guest of the Inaugural Function was Prof. Dr. Arif A. Broadway, Director Extension. Dr. C.R Mehta, PC, CIAE, Bhopal presided as the guest of honour. The other dignitaries present were Prof. Rev. Sarvjeet Herbert, Pro Vice Chancellor, Planning Monitoring and Development, Prof. Brown from Japan, Prof. Ranu Prasad, Dean, Home Science, Prof. Shailesh Marker, Director Research, Dr. Sadhana Pandey, Principle Scientist ATARI Kanpur, Dr. S.D. MeCarty, Head Sr. Scientist, KVK, Prof. Sheen C. Moses, Dept. Farm Machinery and Power Engineering, Dr. Rana Nooralam, Research Engineer, AICRP on Farm Implements and Machinery, Dept. of Agriculture Engineering. Dr. Robin L. Prasad, Registrar visited the workshop and share his views among the participate about drudgery.

“Rural Women Friendly drudgery reducing technologies” was conducted by Prof. Dr. C.R Mehta PC, CIAE, Bhopal. He gave a pictorial demonstration on various women friendly drudgery reducing technologies which are developed by CIAE, Bhopal which were ergonomic, cost effective and women friendly.

The third technical session was on “Drudgery prone activities in Home, Farm and Allied Field activities” by Dr. Mrs. Razia Parvez, Head Dpt. of FRMCS in which she highlighted the household activities which were categorized under Home, Farm and Allied Field activities which are most drudgery prone activities and their reasons of being drudgery prone.

The fourth technical session was on “Equipments used for Workload Assessment” was also conducted by Dr. Mrs. Razia Parvez, Head Dept. of FRMCS. All the Drudgery Assessment Equipments were displayed and their function and practical use was explained. The delegates had a hands on experience by using the practical instruments.

The keynote speaker Prof. Dr. C.R Mehta PC, CIAE, Bhopal spoke on “The Assessment of Cardiovascular Physiological Workload’’. He explained various methods of measuring energy expenditure and also highlighted research results conducted in CIAE Bhopal on assessment of drudgery of farm women on various drudgery prone farm activities.
The speaker for the session was Dr. Rekha Verma Asst.Prof. Dept. of FRMCS, SHUATS. She spoke on measuring of Physical Fitness by various methods such as stepping Ergometer, BMI, and grip strength. Also highlighted the importance and significance of physical fitness in the activity analysis.

The session was conducted by Dr. Razia Parvez , Head,Dept. of FRMCS. She spoke upon “Recording of Heart Rate, Calculating energy expenditure”. It was explained practically how to measure the heart rate, cardiovascular physiological work load of a women after performing anactivity.

The technical session 8 was on “Calculating Physiological cost of work” Dr Razia Parvez explained the various related concepts and terminologies of drudgery assessment and various derivative formulas to calculate the Cardiac Cost of Work (CCW), Cardiac Cost of Recovery ( CCR) and Total Cardiac Cost of Work( TCCW) practically by using various energy assessment instruments. All the participants calculated the Total Cardiac Cost of Work/ Physiological work load of an activity.

Prof. Sheen Moses, Dept. of Farm machinery and Power Engineering lead the session on “Small and Medium Farm and Implements for Drudgery Reduction” in Vaugh Institute of Agricultural Engineering and Technology (VIAET). Prof. Dr. Sheen Moses focused on drudgery, reasons of drudgery in Agriculture, types of health hazards faced by farm women. He demonstrated small and medium implements developed by FMPE, SHUATS such as Hybrid Pedal operated Paddy thresher cum winnower, Rotary Maize Sheller.

Dr. Razia Parvez, Head,Dept. of FRMCS, conducted session on “Anthropometry and Anthropometric Measurements” in which she imparted knowledge on anthropometry and relative concepts and terminologies. She also depicted pictorially anthropometrically land marks of front view and side view of whole body,head and face, pelvis of male and female. She also explained static and dynamic measurements , use of anthropometry for design application, statistical application of anthropometric data. Followed by a practical demonstration on taking various body measurements by using various instruments like Anthropometer, Stature meter and Integrated Anthropometer.

Dr. Razia Parvez, Head,Dept. of FRMCS, conducted session on “Postures at Work, Postural Discomfort and Muscular Stress”. She explained sitting, standing , banding postures guidelines to adopt correct posture, causes an effect on poor postures. To assess the postural discomfort the parameters such as intensity of pain in different body parts , frequency of postural change, angle of deviation of back from the normal curve and grip fatigue was explained.

Dr. Razia Parvez, Head,Dept. of FRMCS, conducted session on Practical on “Assessment of Postural Discomfort and Angle of Deviation from the Normal Curve”. involved practical demonstration on measuring various angles of body while work. The use of Flexi curve was demonstrated in measuring the shape/ curve of spine before work and after work. The postural discomfort in various parts of the dody was measured with the help of body map. And intensity of painin various prts of body parts was indicated with the help of coloured sketch pens. All the participants practiced on how to to calculate angle of deviation from the normal curve.
Dr. Razia Parvez, Head,Dept. of FRMCS, conducted session on “Grip Strength and Grip Fatigue”. She explained about the complete procedure of using Grip Dynamometer and measure the Strength of Muscles at work and the strength of muscles at rest. It was measured before and after the work of both right and left hands.

Dr. Razia Parvez, Head,Dept. of FRMCS, conducted session on “Calculating grip fatigue” The hands on practical learning experience on Measurement of Grip Fatigue of right and left hand.The grip fatigue was measured by putting the values in to the formula. All the participants measured the grip fatigue and practiced it again and again.

Dr. Satyendra Nath, Asst. Prof, Department of Environmental Science and Natural Resource Management, College of Forestry, SHUATS conducted the Technical session on “Environmental Conditions at Work”. He emphasized on the environmental factors influencing the work environment namely Temprature, Air quality, Water quality, Light intensity, Relative humidity and Noise intensity. He also highlighted upon the various instruments by which these factors are measured and various scales used in pollutant determination caused by pollution in the Indian context.

Dr. Nisha Chacko, Assistant Professor, Dept. of FRMCSconducted the session on “Qualitative Methods of Drudgery Assessment”. She explained about the ergonomic risk assessment, Work Hazards and related Musculo-Skeletal Disoders( MSDs), Methods of qualitative and quantitative assessments and various tools for qualitative and quantitative assessments.

Dr. Nisha Chacko, Assistant Professor, Dept. of FRMCSconducted the session on “Drudgery Assessment by Standardized Techniques”in which she explained Rapid Entire Body Assessment ( REBA) and Rapid Upper Limb Assessment ( RULA) she also hilighlighted upon the strain index, checlisats, Material Machine Handling and OSHA Energy Cost Calculator, she explained the assessment of stress by various scores by the scoring sheets. Everyone did it practically.
Prof. Rev. Sarvjeet Herbert, Pro Vice Chancellor, Planning Monitoring and Development,was the chief guest for the valedictory function. Prof. Dr. Ranu Prasad Dean Ethelind College of Home Science precided as guest. The function was started with the word of prayer lead by Brothewr Lal Chun Ganka Assistant Chapline. Chief guest and other dignitaries were welcomed with the bouquets of flowers and mementoes were presented to the Chief guest and other invited dignitaries. A brief report of Five Days Workshop along with the recommendations was presented by Dr. Razia Parvez Organizing Secretary the backbone of the entire workshop.gave vote of thanks on this memorable occasion. All thanks and glory to the Almighty God for making the national workshop a great success. She gave special gratitude to Prof. Rev. Sarvjeet Herbert, Pro Vice Chancellor, Planning Monitoring and Development for acting swiftly on the behalf of Pro Vice Chancellor Academics Affairs & Quality Assurance Prof.(Dr.) A.K.A Lawrence and readily accepting the invitation to preside not only the inaugural Programme but also for the valedictory session, He shared of the equal rights between Man and Women, Husband and Wife, and that “Empowered shared of the equal rights between Man and Women, Husband and Wife, and that “Empowered Women and empower society”. D Scholar for working day and night and making this workshop a great success. A note of appreciation was given to Dr. Syed Zafar Abbas Naqvi, Academic Coordinator (AAQA) and Nickhlesh Cutting Computer Operator (AAQA), SHUATS. Vote of thanks was given by Prof. Dr. Razia Parvez, Organizing Secretary- the backbone of the entire workshop. Two delegates Dr. Premlata Srivastava from KVk Balia and Nimisha Awasthi from KVK Kanpur shared their views regarding the workshop which were very positive and encouraging. After that distribution of certificate was done by the Chief Guest Prof. Rev. Sarvjeet Herbert, Pro Vice Chancellor fallowed by Chief Guest address.The closing prayer was lead by Prof. Dr. Ranu Prasad Dean, Ethelind College of Home Science. The function was end up with the Valedictory Tea at KVK Training Hall of SHUATS.

All the reading materials on the various topics covered by the eminent speakers in five days Workshop cum Training on Drudgery Assessment was provided in the form of manual named ‘Consumer Ergonomics’ and all the Power Point Presentation were given in pen drives of all the delegates.
Daily press release was prepared and used to appear daily in many Hindi and English News Papers (News clipping enclosed).
